Flowers on the Go: Our Favorite Scenic Spots Near Bend for Moment-Making

Whether you're scouting an elopement, planning an engagement surprise, or just looking for a reason to pack a picnic and get out of town, it’s hard to imagine a more picturesque place to explore than our own backyard in Central Oregon. How lucky are we that we can be at an alpine lake, desert canyon, or a waterfall trailhead all within an hour or two of home?!

Here are five of our favorite scenic spots near Bend for celebrating something special, ranked from most accessible outing to ambitious adventure.

Top Five Scenic Spots Near Bend

Tumalo Falls

  • Travel effort: Easy (~20min drive & walk up)
  • Best for: Post-engagement photos, a quick "wow" without committing to a whole day
  • The ‘Deets: A short, flat, easy walk to the falls. Keep wandering if you want smaller falls further up the creek/more private spot. 
  • Season: Year round - bring your own snowshoes for winter wonderland fun!

Sparks Lake

  • Travel effort: Easy-ish (~30min drive, short walk)
  • Best for: Proposals, elopement ceremonies, sunrise & sunset magic.
  • The 'Deets: Hit the bumpy, dusty road around the lake & find your mini-hike-in spot along the shore. Wait for that mirror-still reflection of South Sister and Broken Top - Ooph! It gets us every dang time!
  • Season: May - November, once the highway opens up 

Smith Rock

  • Travel effort: Easy-moderate (~45min drive, plus hiking)
  • Best for: Dramatic high desert elopement & engagement photos 
  • The 'Deets: Rim trail if you want the view without the workout (except for that dang climb up at the very end), canyon trails if you're up for more. Pro tip: Planning a ceremony? They allow permitted amphitheater use but call ahead, it books up fast!
  • Season: Year round, though at your own risk on summer afternoons. There isn’t shade and it gets hot!

Painted Hills

  • Travel effort: Moderate. Easy access, long drive time (~2hrs)
  • Best for: A dramatic change of scenery outside of the classics
  • The 'Deets: The trails are flat and easy, it's just a haul to get out there. Make a whole day of it. Those red-and-gold striped hills are incredible in person!
  • Season: Spring or fall. Beware of summer heat!

Broken Top & South Sister

  • Travel effort: The Whole Enchilada. Miles & elevation gain make for an epic day out. 
  • Best for: Couples who want to earn the view
  • The 'Deets: Go via Green Lakes or the Broken Top loop. Either way, you're working for it. Big payoff at the top, with plenty of picturesque spots along the way. Pro tip: Be sure to secure your Three Sisters Wilderness day-hike permit! 
  • Season: May - October, once the highway opens up

P.S. Tips for Keeping Your Flowers Fresh on the Road

If you're picking up an arrangement or bouquet before heading out, a few small things go a long way:

  • Pick your flowers up right before you hit the road to minimize time in a hot car.
  • Bring a water source. A mason jar with a lid keeps stems hydrated even out of a vase.
  • Keep them out of the trunk - heat builds up fast back there! The floor of the back seat, out of direct sun, is your best bet.
  • Keep them upright and cushioned during transport: a box or bag with some towels to tuck it in tightly on the floorboard prevents tipping and crushed blooms. Pro tip: a soft-sided cooler with an ice pack or two keeps blooms shaded and a few degrees cooler than the rest of the car. 

  • If you desire, give the stems a quick trim when you arrive. A fresh angled cut once you're at your spot helps them perk back up after the ride.
